I have a cocoa app that basically only lets you take photos in specific situations. However, if you have Growl turned on, you get all sorts of notifications that I don’t want, such as when someone is sending you a text message, they have started a call, etc.
Is there a way to do this in my app delegate? I have tried adding a BOOL var to NSUserDefaults to stop this behavior, but it does not save it when the app is put into the background or minimized.
I have tried using key-value observing for NSUserDefaults, but I have not been able to figure out how to add NSUserDefaults to my initWithCoder. I am sure it can be done, but I am missing the key-value syntax.

what you should really be doing is building your own notification center for NSUserDefaults…

Create a static subclass to NSUserDefaults that provides a setter and getter that won’t register with Growl.
Create your own class that inherits from NSUserDefaults with your custom accessors
Bind the notifications that you care about to your notification center.
